Overview

Battlestars Galactica and Pegasus are rocked by an series of bombs and stranded by a Cylon trap, leaving only a new Viper experimental fighter to save them.

Summary

  • Admiral William Adama, in Galactica's CIC, consults with his son, Commander Lee Adama of Pegasus, on strategies to rescue the civilians on the now-occupied New Caprica.
  • Galactica and Pegasus strike mines in the area. Admiral Adama calls the remnants of the Fleet to a full stop.
  • A wireless transmission is received by Pegasus XO Dualla: A copy of Aaron Doral, a known Cylon agent is requesting to speak to Admiral Adama.
  • Helo patches the call to Admiral Adama, who is surprised to hear from yet another copy of this dangerous Cylon.
  • Doral chides them, noting that Adama's fleet appears to be preoccupied with avoiding the minefield. Doral continues, indicating that the military installation on New Caprica now belongs to the Cylons. Lee Adama reacts in shock.
  • Doral indicates the mines surrounding the Fleet are magnetic. Even if the ships hold still, eventually the magnetic pull of the mines will move them towards the ships and activate their triggers, obliterating the Fleet. Doral suggests to Admiral Adama that prayer to his blasphemous Lords of Kobol couldn't hurt for he and his crew.
  • The sound of chuckling is evident as Doral thanks an anonymous "helper on your ship" in revealing the Fleet's whereabouts as the wireless goes silent. Admiral Adama prepares to launch Vipers when Commander Lee Adama stops him, realizing that Vipers would be useless. The Vipers have metal throughout their fuselages that would activate the sensitive magnetic triggers of the mines and destroy the fighters before they could get close enough to destroy the mine itself.
  • Commander Adama suggests the use of an experimental fighter built on Pegasus with similar technologies to that used in the old Blackbird. In particular, the fighter is built with non-ferrous materials, which will prevent the mines from detonating while the new fighter approaches to destroy them.
  • Admiral Adama agrees to the plan, but realizes the odds: Helo counts nearly 3000 mines in the area. The fighter has less than 2 hours to destroy the mines before the Fleet comes too close to the minefield.
  • Lee Adama laments that Kara "Starbuck" Thrace is on New Caprica as she would be a fine pilot for this mission. However, Admiral Adama suggests that Kat, aboard Pegasus, take the new fighter, as she has shown her top-gun fighting skills worthy of even Starbuck's.
  • Commander Adama concurs with his father. Contacting Pegasus about the situation, Dualla notes that a second copy of the fighter was just completed the day before. The second fighter would greatly increase the Fleet's odds of survival if the fighters can shoot all of the mines in time.
  • Admiral Adama gives the order to launch every Viper Z.I.G fighter they have to rid them of the minefield.
  • Several ships in the Fleet are jeopardized as two mines stray too closely, but Kat is able to remove them in time.
  • Galactica and Pegasus activate their defensive batteries and attempt pin-point shooting to aid in removing more of the mines, Helo notes that, due to their distances, only 1 shot out of 50 appear to be hitting their mark.
  • After one tense moment where the last dozen mines accelerate towards the Fleet, Kat and her wingman destroy the last mines. After the experimental fighters land, the Fleet Jumps to safety.

Questions

  • There may still be a Cylon agent in the Fleet that gave its location away. Who set the Fleet up with the bombs?

Analysis

Noteworthy Dialogue

  • As an explosion rocks Galactica:
Admiral Adama: (in CIC with Commander Lee Adama) What the hell happened?
Helo: DRADIS contacts! They appear static, no CBDR...they're all around us, but they don't appear to be Raiders, sir. Looks like somebody set us up in a minefield.
Admiral Adama: How many?
Helo: At least three thousand, sir. I'm trying...wait (hears something in his headset)I'm getting a wireless signal...not Colonial, but definitely voice. It's asking for you, sir.
Admiral Adama: Put it through. (Toggles the external speakers for Commander Adama to hear)
Voice of Aaron Doral: How are you, Admiral Adama? You seem preoccupied. Do you know who this is?
Admiral Adama: Yeah. I recognize your voice. Another Aaron Doral. What do you want?
Doral: All your battlestars now belong to us. Soon, I figure the rest of your fleet will be destroyed as well.
Commander Lee Adama:Sir, we can't launch any of our Vipers. The mines will activate before they get close enough to fire and they'll be blown to bits.
Admiral Adama: We can't stand still. We can't attack. We can't do our jobs. (stares intently at Lee) If you have any bright ideas, the time is now.
  • Lee gets a bright idea:
Commander Adama: Admiral..dad...I think we might have something back on Pegasus. The guys there were getting bored like we were before that logic bomb thing. Started work on an experimental Viper with some scraps and material not suitable for a standard Viper. Damn...this might work...
Admiral Adama: What Viper?
Commander Adama: The guys took it for a ride once. The stabilizers weren't quite calibrated and it zigged and zagged in the sky until they fixed it. Flew fine otherwise. They nicknamed it the Viper ZIG after that. It's got no magnetic metals...or at least not enough that should trigger those mines.
Admiral Adama: Good. So what's the problem?
Commander Adama: The guys built only one. One fighter to kill all those mines in 2 hours?
  • Lee gives Kat a pep talk:
Commander Adama: (over wireless, in CIC) Kat, we've watched you in action. You can do this. Make me...make...make even Starbuck proud of you.
Kat: You can count on this old boonie-jumper, Commander.
Commander Adama: (to Dualla) Launch every ZIG.
Dualla: Yes sir.
  • Admiral Adama notes the fighters launching:
Admiral Adama: It's in your hands, ZIG fighters. So say we all.
